Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fix Windows activation errors?
Run the Activation Troubleshooter: Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Troubleshoot. If that fails, try: 1) Open elevated Command Prompt, 2) Run 'slmgr /ipk YOUR-PRODUCT-KEY' to re-enter your key, 3) Run 'slmgr /ato' to activate online. For hardware changes, use the digital license troubleshooter.
What is KMS activation and why does it fail?
KMS (Key Management Service) is used for volume licensing in organizations. KMS activation fails when the client cannot reach the KMS server (network issues), the KMS server has insufficient activations (minimum 25 for Windows), or the KMS key has expired. Contact your IT administrator to verify KMS server status.
Will I lose my files if Windows is not activated?
No, you will not lose any files or installed applications. An unactivated Windows will still function but with limitations: a watermark on the desktop, inability to personalize themes/wallpapers, and some features may be restricted. Your data and programs remain intact.
How do I transfer my Windows license to a new computer?
Retail licenses can be transferred: deactivate on the old PC with 'slmgr /upk' in an elevated Command Prompt, then enter the key on the new PC. OEM licenses (pre-installed) are tied to the original hardware and cannot be transferred. Digital licenses linked to a Microsoft account can sometimes be transferred via the Activation Troubleshooter.
